Environmental Impact Assessment can be defined as the detection, evaluation and assessment of behaviour or project on both bio-physical environment, all the physical, chemical and biological elements of life such as air, water and soil and socio-cultural environment, which encompasses economic aspects as well as hereditary factors.

Major areas of work for environmental engineers can be classified into two: 1.Planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of various pollution control equipment 2.Planning, management, quality assessment and optimum use of natural resources.

Environmental Consultancy pertains to more management oriented functions and requires planning and strategy development in issues regarding a more rational use of natural assets such as air, water and soil resources.
